    From the initial 100 assessments, 75 small-to-medium-sized manufacturers will be approved to receive comprehensive smart manufacturing technical assessments to help develop implementation project ideas and strategies.     Project solution plan and cost proposal are to be submitted to SMARTER NC for approval of any reimbursements prior to project start. 50 projects will be approved for partial reimbursement of some project non-equipment costs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    The SMARTER NC team will review the quote and agree to reimburse a matching level of non-equipment costs, including integration and training expenses. Note: Participating companies must provide a matching investment of at least 30% of the project cost. Example: For a $20,000 smart manufacturing implementation project, SMARTER NC can approve reimbursement of up to $14,000. The maximum reimbursement for any company project is $25,000. Average reimbursements are expected to be ~$13,000. The company completes the approved project with 3rd<\/sup> party and submits the agreed-upon reimbursement amount for payment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    To receive SMARTER NC reimbursement funds, approved applicants must:<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Submit a detailed cost proposal for the SMARTER NC project, subject to reimbursement, including itemized labor and materials expenditures<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Obtain a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI). This has replaced the Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Have a procurement review process in place<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Complete an environmental questionnaire as required by DOE<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Receive documented evidence of approval by DOE and SMARTER NC<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Submit evidence of paid invoices for the approved and completed SMARTER NC project<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    The Internet of Things (IoT), originally coined in 1999, has made its way into the vernacular only in the past few years; it is now commonly associated as being a puzzle piece of Smart Manufacturing. What lacked at the turn of the century was a clear understanding of how these \u201cnew-concept\u201d devices would talk to systems of importance, e.g. a controller or ingestion mechanism, and, more importantly, how they would be ultimately used to benefit our everyday lives. Home automation, smart phone-enabled and other simple devices soon became commonplace, and we began to see the benefit of these \u201cthings\u201d. Fast-forward, industry found great utility in placing these devices within their own systems to capture information that may not have been native when the original system was developed.     Today, with the need for robustness and security, IoT devices in the industrial world have taken on another qualifier, IIoT.
